Coaching - The Power of Pausing
Amplify your coaching impact
Description
When we are acting as a coach, our main goal is to help people think things through and come up with new thoughts about whatever it is that they are trying to figure out so that they can move forward. Perhaps it is a person that is trying to decide whether to change careers or a team that is considering changing how they work together. Pausing, or saying nothing, is a powerful tool for helping people think.
Of course, anybody can sit in silence on their own, thinking, reflecting, getting in touch with their feelings, or meditating. That said, coaching can help us keep our minds from wandering too far afield and help us find new perspectives about ourselves and our situation. There’s also something about articulating what’s on our mind to another person that helps us think beyond what we can do on our own. To nurture the new perspectives and thoughts that come up into steps forward requires people to spend time thinking them through, reflecting on them, and getting a sense for how they feel about them. It takes two-way interaction to get to that point, but people need silence, aka a pause, in order to do that thinking, reflecting, and feeling.
In this mini-course, you will gain a deeper appreciation for pausing. You will discover the power of pausing and how it could amplify your coaching impact. You will see a demonstration of what not to do and what to do as well as a debrief.
