Why Use Movement to Release Muscle Tension and Reduce Stress Response?
In In this course you will be guided to learn new ways of using body movements as self-care. Through easy-to-follow lessons, you will learn gentle therapeutic movements that are designed to evoke deeply relaxing processes in your brain. Note, that jaw related stress is NOT the fault of the jaw muscles. The root cause is at a deeper level, in your brain. The habit of muscle tension, the habit of clenching your jaw, and the habit of stress response are always taking place in your brain and this is what you need to change and heal. Therefore, to permanently improve, it is necessary to find ways to develop brain’s way of functioning. Therapeutic movements can do this.
Doing therapeutic movements with your jaw has an extra dimension with extra benefits. At a deeper level, within the cranial neural network, your jaw muscles connect to your autonomic nervous system. Also called the Polyvagal System, this part of your body-brain organization regulates your stress response. This is the system that manages your feelings like anxiety, fear, and nervousness. At times, when the stress response kicks in, your heart rate increases, your breathing gets shallow, and muscles tense up — especially your jaw muscles. But the system also works the other way around. By clenching your jaw enough and over a long enough time, you trigger and intensify your stress response. As a result, you can easily get trapped in a vicious jaw-stress circle, which also affects your general Polyvagal tone, increasing levels of stress in all body areas and functions. Fortunately, with the therapeutic movements that you will learn in this course, you can achieve the opposite, and gradually learn how to stop the pain-anxiety-tension cycle. In other words, you will learn to promote relaxation response, recover, and heal.
