Level 1-Story 12, Billy’s Bix and Westin’s Rex is a delightful story about two best friends, Billy and Westin and their dogs.
The story is written around the phonetic elements of all previous stories in Level 1. The narration provides further reading skills by listening to the words and sentences allowing the learner to not only see the word, but to hear it pronounced.
The MAIN IDEA, “People Enjoy Doing Good Things For Children,” shows the kindness of people in wanting to bring joy into other’s lives, especially children.
Billy had a dog and Westin did not.
Westin wanted a dog so badly that he tried to keep Billy’s dog when his dog came to him, but we all know that you can’t keep another person’s dog.
So, Billy and Westin and their mothers go to see Mr. Bradley who owns a dog kennel to find a special dog for Westin.
LISTENING TO THE STORY WITHOUT NARRATION allows the student to hear the words pronounced along with viewing the story on screen, demonstrating the relationship between letters, words and sounds.
PHONICS, WRITING AND SPELLING provides the student with creative ways to listen to their voice, and to recognize the sound that’s said by others.
This section continues and reviews the many Level 1 activities such as:

· Writing Directions
· Body Writing
· Sound Sentences
· Quickie Questions
· Blends and Words to Sound, Read and Spell, and
· Sight Words
FICTION NONFICTION WRITING includes several genres that the CompuRead program stories are written around. It also emphasizes the story title, main idea and the specific genre, Animal Tale/Realistic Fiction, that Billy’s Bix and Westin’s Rex was written under.
VOCABULARY AND EXPRESSIVE SPEAKING includes relevant phrases that enhances the student’s vocabulary and sight word mastery. This story introduces; singular and plural meaning and spelling and making a personal dictionary.
SCIENCE BACKGROUND discusses and talks all about dogs and the rich history of dogs and how the dog has been with man for centuries.
STORY MAPPING again reviews the story telling and writing process and shows the various aspects of writing and how a story is composed.
HOME FUN contains activities the student can be involved with at home to assist in his learning to read process.
The Reading Skills Review provides a way for the student and teacher to review the concepts learned and tracks the student’s progress through the CompuRead program.
