Description

Both electricity and magnetism have been known for more than 2000 years. However thier intimate relationship was discovered only 200 years ago. oersted discovered in the year 1820 that a straight wire carrying current caused a noticeable

deflection in a nearby magnetic compass needle. The wire carrying current  must be associated with the magnetic field causing deflection in the compass needle.

When a wire carrying current is held perpendicular to the plane of paper and a ring of compass needle surrounds the wire the orientation of needle is tangential on magnetic field  lines.

If we sprinkle iron fillings around the wire carrying current they arrange themselves i concentric circleswith the wire as the centre. Oersted thus concluded that moving charges or currents produce magnetic field in the surrounding space.

In this course we will study

1. How current produce magnetic field

2. How magnetic field exert forces on moving charged particles like electrons , protons  and current carrying wires.

3. How charged particles can be accelerated to very high energies in a cyclotron

4. How current and voltages are detected and measured by a galvanometer.

5. Biot savart law

6. Flemings left hand rule

7. Magnetic field due to straight wire carrying current

8. Magnetic field  at the centre of the circular wire carrying current

9. Magnetic field at a point on the axis of a circular coil carrying current .

10.Magnetic field due to various current carrying configurations

11. Amperes circuital law.

12. Applications of Amperes circuital law.
