Mandala Dot Painting, A Step-By-Step Guide
An enjoyable activity for Adults, including those with Dementia.
Description
The word mandala arises from the Sanskrit and means sacred circle. The purpose of a mandala in this six-part video lesson is to help transform and assist with relaxation; placing each dot of color is a slow process that helps quiet the mind. The Mandala Dot Painting step-by-step guided workshop helps adults to destress through the repetitive placement of each dot to quiet the mind, becoming a form of meditation.
To keep this course affordable students will learn to use everyday items as tools. Students may derive pleasure and satisfaction from repetitive motions as the technique I share in guiding students by placing dots step-by-step at a relaxed pace to form a colorful pattern. These activities of creating offer cognitive, physical, and emotional stimulation. When a person is engaged in artistic activities that nurture their soul, it gives them a sense of purpose and belonging.
At age 85 my mother was diagnosed with Dementia and depression. She experienced a sense of joy when I taught her how to paint for the first time. My mother smiled with enthusiasm and truly enjoyed her newly learned skills. I believe it is about the process, not the outcome, and I encourage this in the lesson. Students should feel proud that they are trying something new, to learn to discover, to play again, and to embrace their inner child’s uniqueness that is waiting to surface.
Note: There is a short bell sound meditation included in part 1 to help you relax before we begin. Download the Mandala Step-By-Step Lesson Plan sheet. It contains a list of materials you will need to start creating. Now let's have some fun!
