Description

Mental retardation (MR) is one of the more common developmental disabilities. Mental retardation in young children is often missed by clinicians. The condition is present in 2 to 3 percent of the population, either as an isolated finding or as part of a syndrome or broader disorder. Causes of mental retardation are numerous and include genetic and environmental factors. In at least 30 to 50 percent of cases, physicians are unable to determine etiology despite thorough evaluation. It can be idiopathic and challenging to recognize in normal-appearing children who have developmental delays.

After completing this course, the students will able to:

  1. Understand the concept and definition of mental retardation.

  2. Understand the causes and etiology of mental retardation which can occur in different stages.

  3. Classify the mentally retarded child or intellectual disability child according to their IQ level and can identify the sign and symptoms of mentally retarded child or intellectual disability child

  4. Learn various diagnostic procedures used to identify mentally retarded children or intellectual disability children at early stages and know about their prognosis.

  5. Learn various levels of prevention that can be done in various stages.

  6. Know the basic concept of how to care for and rehabilitate mentally retarded children according to their classification.

  7. Know how they can help families to cope with their children and able to clarify the doubts of parents.
