The human skin is a versatile organ in adapting to various environment factors. They have four (4) primary functions: thermoregulation, storage and synthesis, sensation, and protection against external and internal stimuli.


Synergistically working alongside is the skin microflora which remains stable during a homeostasis conditions of the skin. However when there is a disruption to the harmonious environment of the skin, the microbes- causing skin diseases.


In this 6-part series titled "Microbes & Skin Health," you will learn to recognize the commonly found microbes on skin, learn about its classification and understand unhealthy lifestyle and habits which contribute to skin complications. From this segment, we will discuss the common skin microbial infections along with its examples for easy learning. Furthermore, you will also learn the method of classification used to categorize microbes based on their shapes and composition of cell wall.



3rd Segment: The Skin Microflora and the Pathophysiology of the Skin

· Intended Learning Outcome:

In this segment, you will learn about the consequences that occur when the skin microbiota becomes unstable, resulting in skin diseases. The pathophysiology of the skin will be discussed in detail, leading up to the formation of the skin diseases.



4th Segment: Skin Complications Caused by the Lifestyle and Wellness Habits

· Intended Learning Outcome:

At this stage of learning, you will learn the importance of recognizing the unhealthy lifestyle and wellness habits that would otherwise go unnoticed. The skin complications caused by bad lifestyle choices would also be introduced, along with an immunological response modelled after them.



5th Segment: Treatments Available for Skin Problems

In this subsequent segment, you will be introduced to the various treatments available for skin issues that are commonly used by beauticians. In addition, you will learn how to recommend correct and safer products to clients without disrupting the natural skin microflora.



6th Segment: The Must-Do/Must-Not-Do of Therapist in Addressing Skin Health to Client

In this final segment, you will learn the essential do's and don'ts of addressing a client's skin problems as a professional therapist. Besides that, you will be equipped with the knowledge on the pros and cons of recent trending beauty treatments, as well as the significance of recognizing skin allergic symptoms prior to treatment.
