To become a registered patent agent in India, one must pass the Indian Patent Agent Exam conducted by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The eligibility criteria for appearing for the Indian Patent Agent Exam are as follows:

  1. Educational Qualification: The candidate must hold a degree in Science, Engineering, or Technology from a recognized university.

  2. Age Limit: There is 21 years age limit for appearing for the exam.

  3. Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India or must be an individual who is a resident in India.

  4. Experience: There is no mandatory requirement for work experience


    Paper 1 is a multiple-choice objective type exam that covers topics such as general science, current affairs, and reasoning. Paper 2 is a written exam that tests the candidate's knowledge of patent law and practice in India.

To qualify for the Indian Patent Agent Exam, the candidate must obtain a minimum of 50% marks in each paper and an overall aggregate of 60% marks. Candidates who successfully pass the exam will be registered as a patent agents in India and will be able to practice as a patent agent.
