Not Just Shakespeare
An Introduction to Poetry for ESL Learners
Description
The Arts have always been a great passion of mine. For a newcomer struggling with language sometimes I find students can forget that language should be fun. I am a believer that all students learn better when the process is enjoyable and It should be a way for everyone to express their creativity. Within this course together, we explore some short profound pieces of poetry. I have chosen them for their modernity as much as for their importance because I think the word "poetry" can be a bit frightning for students who are new to the language. The course explores examples of free verse, Haiku and Limerick as an introduction to form. We also examine the power of silence within the language and begin to undertand that the less we say, often the better command of language we must have. Most importantly we learn about how our experiences and emotions contribute to the creation of poetry. We reach into the analysis of the works learning new vocabulary along the way. There is also an example of art song which I am very excited to share so that the students can see the practical uses for poetry and how often times art forms and language need each other to exhist. This marriage is when any language becomes very exciting! All material presented arecited or of my own creation. For any student who loves the arts, this course is for you.
