Description
This class is Part 2 of an introductory survey of the fundamental aspects of music technology as it relates to music composition, performance, analysis, teaching, and research. Skills and concepts learned in this course will provide a foundation and basic understanding of music technology necessary for application in other courses of the music curriculum (i.e. theory, history, performance, and music education). This course provides a basic overview of the Microphone.
*Note: for some of the examples a set of "upgraded" headphones (other than the "earbuds") would improve the experience.
Learning Goals and Objectives:
This course is designed to meet the following goals:
• provide a conceptual overview of the Microphone
• give a broad perspective of the many ways the Microphone is used in music applications
-no specific software required for this section of the course.
-no exams/quizzes/assignments for this section of the course.
-any additional materials would be found in the Resource section of the course.
Topic Schedule:
•What is a Microphone, purpose and structure.
•The three main types of Microphone (Dynamic, Condenser and Ribbon).
•The three main Polar patters (Unidirectional /Cardioid, Bidirectional/ Figure 8 and Omnidirectional).
•What is a Preamp, purpose and types.
•Related Microphone topics such as: Phantom Power, Microphone's Frequency Response and Microphone Filters.
