The course goes through a wide variety of tools that Art Therapists use. Each tool is explained and many many examples are given.

Here is the list of tools discussed:


  • Painting - the act of doing as well as looking at paintings

  • Drawing

  • Sculpture

  • Collage

  • Writing

  • Photography

  • Textiles

  • Digital

  • Masks

  • Movement

  • Poetry - several examples are given

  • Role-play - two short films are included showcasing Edith Piaf

  • Self-Portraiture

  • Mandala (making or colouring)

  • Film-making

Not only do we discuss the tools used by Art Therapists but we also look at the three different approaches:


  • Cognitive behavioural

  • Psychodynamic

  • Humanistic

We also include many long - and short - art therapy exercises.

Film-making

Here an existing film is taken (a short film) and broken down into many short, short clips. Each clip is then shown - with reflective questions - thus showing how films may be used.

A number of cartoons are included. students are invited to suggest how these cartoons may be used in Art Therapy sessions

Poetry therapy

Poems written by students - and now with film added - are included for comments and discussion

The emphasis throughout is on application, reflection and discussion.

The individual lectures are mind-mapped but links to film clips, formal studies, images, poems and the work of various artists are inserted into the lectures. Two of the artists whose work is featured in the course have also agreed to respond to questions/suggestions made by students on the course.
