In this course, you will learn about the history, structure and all essential components of the two predominant forms of Indian music, Hindustani and Carnatic. Let us understand the illustrious past of both these forms, and their evolution over time. We will explore different facets that combine to form the foundations and essential structures of this rich cultural gift.
The course starts with a simple explanation of what Indian Classical Music is, and how it came about. It makes a gradual transition into the details of the origins and evolution of the art. Following this, the essential melodic (Raga) and rhythmic(Tala) components of both Carnatic and Hindustani music such as Gati, Shruti, Swara, Kalpana Swara, Meend, Gamaka etc. are described in detail in order to offer a clear understanding of what an Indian Classical concert entails. Further, several important instruments used in Indian Music are described as well. A glossary defining the key terms used as well as example tracks consisting of musical pieces described in the course are provided as part of the course material to offer more clarity about what the musical aspects described sound like in reality.
